Fulton Hogan takes the road to better communications
Fulton Hogan Ltd is one of New Zealand’s largest roading and infrastructure construction companies, with operations in New Zealand and Australia. Founded in Dunedin in 1933 by Jules Fulton and Bob Hogan, today the company employs over 3000 staff and has annual sales of NZ $900 million. In 2002 Fulton Hogan was named ‘Company of the Year’ in Management magazine’s prestigious annual ‘Top 200’ company awards.
With more than 1000 trucks scattered throughout the country, Fulton Hogan needed a reliable, cost-effective, mobile communications system that would enable voice communication between drivers, foremen, managers and suppliers. Fulton Hogan is run regionally, and while the key focus is on each region’s local coverage, Fulton Hogan also requires coverage over a wider area.As much of the company’s core business involves working in remote or rural areas, a key requirement for the communications network was reliability of coverage. Furthermore the tough working conditions faced by Fulton Hogan field crews meant that communications hardware needed to be extremely durable.
For over a decade Fulton Hogan has utilised the TeamTalk mobile radio network. It's a partnership that has continued to evolve since the mid-nineties. Today, TeamTalk provides Fulton Hogan with a sophisticated and robust radio communication platform for over 800 connections, processing thousands of radio jobs daily.
The TeamTalk trunked mobile network allows direct voice communication from base to vehicle, vehicle to vehicle, group calling and roaming. TeamTalk provides Fulton Hogan with nationwide coverage through two trunked mobile radio networks, TeamTalk and FleetLink.
“For a general use in-house communications system, TeamTalk offers a significantly cheaper solution than cellular,” says Richard Shaw, Group Mechanical Engineer, Fulton Hogan Ltd.
“TeamTalk worked actively with us to assess our business needs and provide a completely integrated solution that is essential for the smooth running of our operations. The end result is that we greatly improved control and management of our business.”
The TeamTalk and FleetLink networks allow for wider geographical cover and their coverage in remote rural areas is superior. Their system allows for fast call set-up and one-to-many calls allowing us to dispatch faster and communicate to more of our staff in the field. Richard Shaw, Fulton Hogan Ltd
